How to Become a Coach

Important: Coaching positions are selected by the BYS Board of Directors. Submitting an application and completing a background check does not guarantee a coaching position. We encourage all interested volunteers to apply — the board will contact selected coaches before the season begins.

1

Submit a Coaching Application

Required through Beaufort County Parks & Recreation

All prospective coaches must submit an official application through the Beaufort County Parks and Recreation Department. This applies to head coaches and assistant coaches.

2

Complete a Background Check

Required for all coaches working with youth

All coaches must pass a background check through Beaufort County's Secure Volunteer system. This is a requirement of Beaufort County Parks and Recreation and must be completed annually.

Requirements & Compliance

All BYS coaches must meet the following requirements before working with players. These are in place to protect our athletes and ensure a safe, positive environment for everyone.

  • Always be a positive role model for the children in your care
  • Provide an environment free of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco
  • Place players' emotional and physical wellbeing ahead of winning
  • Treat players, parents, spectators, and officials with respect
  • Use positive reinforcement to further player development
  • Respect and support game umpires — never incite players or spectators against officials
  • Teach that trying your best is more important than winning
  • Refrain from any form of verbal or emotional abuse

"This is a game for the children and not the adults." — DYB Coaches Code of Conduct
